Missionaries are people that take the Gospel out to people who do not know the Lord or to correct those that are following or teaching a perversion of the Jesus commands. Often, a missionary’s family join them on their crusade.
Guess what? The Bible states that all Christians are missionaries. This means that though everyone may travel great distances to fulfill their calling, Christians staying local have similar responsibilities.
All Christians are all called to go into the world and share the Gospel. So all Christians are expected to talk about Christ. In fact, Christians are commanded to be prepared to defend their faith. This doesn’t mean that Christians are expected to defend God, but Christians should know why they do believe in God. It shouldn’t be hard, though talking about it in publically may be at first, because if someone has confessed Christ as their Savior and asked for forgiveness, surely that person knows why they believe that Jesus can save them.
Missionaries often live and work in foreign areas with the people that they are witnessing to. Sometime stay in a relatively local space while others may travel great distances performing their missionary duties. Not all missionaries are in the bush of third world countries. Some work in relatively modernized areas of Europe and other countries and some work in the impoverished areas of America.
Missionaries often align themselves with several churches. The churches either pledge a certain amount of money annually to support the Missionary or a percentage of the yearly church offering. Often, the church also allows members to directly contribute to a missionary.
Aligning with churches has another advantage. A relationship between the missionary and the church that fosters prayer and communications. Missionaries, will generally on occasion, return home and make rounds to the supporting churches informing them on all that God is doing in their mission.
Again, Christ gave the Church latitude in the number of missionaries it utilizes and the amount of financial support it gives. There is no formula for either. As the early churches were praised for sending out missionaries, I would like to suggest that every church should be involved with at least one missionary.
The need of a missionary to take the Word of God to a people has nothing to do with the people’s financial situation or their quality of living. All people, no matter where, have sinned and are in danger of eternal damnation. And likewise, everyone needs to hear the Word of God and the Salvation that Christ brings. Missionaries do this usually where it is more difficult for the average Christian to get to. Christians are expected to do this with their neighbor and those in their community.
