Most religions are ones of appeasement. A “god” has set forth a bunch of rules that its followers are to obey. This generally is to result in a minimal quality of life. The followers are then left to make sacrifices and actions in an effort to appease or make the god happy which in turn will result in greater favoritism to themselves.
Though God does have some hard and fast rules, He doesn’t burden Christians with a large number of them. Instead, He places His laws on their hearts. Christians, with the help of the Holy Spirit, come to know these laws, and the will of God, through prayer and the studying of the scriptures. Christians refer to this as a relationship with God.
Through the relationship, we become partners with Him and know how to execute His will (2 Timothy 2:15). But better than that, we become friends with Him and He even adopts the Christian into His family so that they can call Him Abba, Father (Romans 8:15). And the Christian is guaranteed an inheritance into the eternal kingdom of heaven. What other god offers that? What other god can guarantee that?
Prayer and studying, along with Church fellowship, foster a good relationship with God. Once you develop the relationship, other areas of the Christian life will become available and clear.
** Note ** Although one of the Churches responsibility is to help Christians understand the Bible, it is your responsibility to insure that you get that relationship with God. A church may not live up to its Christ given mandates, but at judgement time (discussed later), God doesn’t accept excuses that someone else didn’t do their job. Sure, if someone didn’t do their job, they’ll be accountable, but you are responsible for yourself. If a church isn’t meeting your spiritual needs, first, let them know and secondly, if they can’t or don’t then meet your spiritual need, leave and find another church! It’s that important.
