So you’ve been living a life of Rebellion against God? Who hasn’t? Who isn’t? Everyone, from the lowly guy on the street corner to the high and mighty evangelist has sinned (except Christ Himself) and will probably sin again; and likely many, many times over.
God knows that we have sinned and that we will sin. But Jesus went around say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17). In fact, He commands it, “…but now he commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30).
Google defines “repent” as “feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin”. But this just sets about recognition of a plight. When the Bible calls for one to repent, it is referring to a change or heart, mind and life.
Doing the opposite of God’s commands and wants is Rebellion. Rebellion leads to separation from God. Sin is another word for rebellion. The Bible contains a long list of rebellious acts. But God also lies on everyone’s hearts, His desire, and more so to those that follow Him. A relationship with God will reveal even more sin in one’s life.
God ask us to come to Him, to reason with Him (Isaiah 1:18 - “Come now, let us reason together…”). God, being perfect, isn’t asking us to come to Him so we can deal, He’s asking us to come to Him so He can show us the error of our ways. When we know our errors, our sins, then we can repent. And through repenting we can ask for forgiveness.
Work in progress. Stay tuned.
