There’s personal worship and cooperate worship. Typically, one thinks of corporate worship as a Sunday morning worship service.
By worshiping God, the Christian is recognizing Him as the upmost power and authority, praising His name and holiness and acknowledging His grace and generosity. Worship can be done anywhere and even through the Christians actions in their daily routine or in utmost reverence.
There are many ways I which to worship God. Through song, prayer, giving and service.
First, the Christian is to only worship the one true God (Luke 4:8 - “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”), and that He is worthy of praise (Psalms 29:2 - “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”) and our praise should be joyful (Psalms 95:1 - O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation).
As a Christian lives their life, they should live it as in worship (Romans 12:1 - “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship”), yet the Christian should let their worship be with reverence (Hebrews 12:28 - “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire”).
A Christians songs should be songs of Worship, says the Psalmist (Psalm 100:2 - “Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs”). Music may accompany worship as noted in 2 Chronicles 29:28, “The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the musicians played and the trumpets sounded….”
A Christian can worship in a variety of ways. Here, the Psalmist, references bowing and kneeling (Psalm 95:6 - . “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker”).
Even for the Christian, there will be days of doubt, downcast, or sadness. But Songs of praise are still applicable. Isaiah 12:5 reminds the Christian of what He has done.
In short, part of the daily Christian life should exercise worship to the Lord.
Cooperatively, worship is more structured typically. And though generally, a Christian wouldn’t carry around musical instruments in their daily activities, a corporate worship often includes music. The early Church would have sung many of the songs that the Jews did prior to Christ’s arrival.
God can understand any language, so there is no preferred linguistic style to the Lord, so long as it is joyful. The singing one hears in movies that sound like Latin moaning does not need to be used. The Bible doesn’t say, but I bet the Lord is happy with traditional and contemporary gospel as well as country, rock, perhaps industrial and maybe even polka and bag-pipes (OK, I doubt He tolerates bag-pipes).
And making a joyful noise is an attitude, not a requirement or ability. If you are mute or deaf, your praise in sign language is perfectly acceptable. I myself do not believe that I possess a audible pleasing voice; however, my voice is what God saw fit to provide me with so it must be sufficient enough for Him and I will use it to the best of my ability to sing His praises.
In the Bible, nearly all corporate worship is accompanied with music. It doesn’t appear to be a requirement and God appears to enjoy it. The only places that I can find that God doesn’t approve of the “noise” are when His worship is done without reverence, such as ritualistic festivals.
Some churches do not use music in their worship. I don’t believe it is wrong to not use music but I do believe that it is incorrect to not use music because the church believes music is wrong. This simply isn’t Biblical. I would have concerns that such a church would push other non-Biblical ideas onto its congregation and seekers.
