If you offend God he will kill you: “And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.” (Genesis 38:7-10).

Well, yes offending God will get you killed. In the long run. Typically, God doesn’t exact punishment on people immediately. He has from time to time but typically there is always a period of time to allow for education and repentance.

But we always to have allow that God has the right to exact punishment at any time that He chooses. The fact that He delays sometimes and other times may seem to us like He is wishy washy, but we have to allow that God knows what is best for the given situation.

In this story, the one brother is tasked with the custom of marrying his dead brother’s wife, getting her pregnant and then the ensuing child would be as if it was a decedent of the dead brother. We aren’t told if God approves of the custom or where it may have come from, But the issue of the punishment isn’t an issue of if it is adultery or sterility, it is an issue of integrity.

The man, Er, was not fulfilling his obligation to his brother by completing the task of impregnating her. Er knew that the child would not be considered his and because of this, he did not want his new wife, his ex sister-in-law, to have a child by him.

So he wouldn’t complete the deed. He’d start the deed, but not complete it. Apparently he enjoyed being with his new wife, just not the thought of the outcome though it was his responsibility.

Anyhow, the contemptal thought that he had at her having a child for his brother and his rebelling against his responsibility, is what incited the Lord to anger and He killed Er.

This is not a comment from the Lord on birth protection or what occurs in the privacy between a married couple. It is a statement from the Lord on how series He takes commitments; apparently not only unto Himself but those commitments that we give to others.
